GTA 6 money guide: how cash actually works

Where money comes from in GTA 6, which methods are worth your evening, and the ones that feel productive while paying almost nothing.

Money is the gate on everything else in a Grand Theft Auto game. Properties, vehicles, businesses and most of the late game content sit behind it, which is why deciding how to earn is the single most useful thing a new player can get right.

The three income types

Story income

Mission payouts. Reliable, one time, and almost always the best rate per minute early on. Finish the story before you grind anything.

Repeatable activities

Side jobs you can run again. Lower per run, but unlimited. This is where most players spend most of their hours.

Passive and business income

Money that accumulates while you do something else. It needs capital up front, which is why it comes third. See how businesses work.

How to decide what to run

  1. Time one full run, including travel and setup. Setup is where methods quietly lose their value.
  2. Divide the payout by that total time, not by the mission timer.
  3. Compare against your current best. If it is not clearly better, keep doing what you were doing.
  4. Recheck after every patch. Payouts get tuned constantly, and the patch notes archive flags which guides a change made wrong.

What to spend on, in order

  • A property with garage space. See the first safehouse guide.
  • One reliable fast vehicle.
  • Your first income producing business.
  • Everything else, much later.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest way to make money in GTA 6?

Story missions, until they run out. After that it depends on which repeatable activities the game ships with, and we will rank them once they can be measured.

Are there money cheats in GTA 6?

No Grand Theft Auto has ever had a cheat that adds money in single player. Anything offering GTA 6 money for free is a scam, and our guide to fake money generators explains what those sites are really after.

Should I save money or spend it early?

Spend it on one property with garage space, then save. Early cosmetics and expensive cars are the two purchases players regret most.
