How to Lose the Police in GTA 6

The wanted system rewards breaking line of sight, not speed. Here is the method that works at every star level.

Most players try to outrun the police. That works until a helicopter joins, and then it never works again. The wanted system in this series is a search system, so the answer is hiding, not speed.

The method

  1. Get out of the pursuit cone. Turn twice in quick succession. Two turns beats one long straight every time.
  2. Break line of sight. Tunnels, multi storey car parks, dense alleys and tree cover all count.
  3. Stop moving. Once the search circle appears, sitting still inside it and out of view ends the pursuit faster than driving through it.
  4. Change vehicle if you were seen clearly. A swap resets what they are looking for.

What does not work

  • Driving in a straight line at top speed. It keeps you in the cone.
  • Fighting at three stars or higher. Reinforcements outpace your ammunition.
  • Hiding in a spot you were seen entering.

More habits like this are collected in our tips and tricks guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does changing clothes remove a wanted level?

Not on its own. Clothing changes have never cleared an active pursuit in the series. Breaking line of sight does.

Can you lose five stars in GTA 6?

The same rules apply at every level, but the search area and the number of units grow. Water and underground cover become the only reliable options at the top end.
